Himachals Green Cover Scheme Promotes Sustainability

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister launched the “Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana” from Hamirpur.

The scheme aims to increase the state’s green cover by planting fruit-bearing trees on barren and degraded forest areas. By involving mahila and yuvak mandals, as well as self-help groups, the initiative seeks to generate employment and income for local communities.During the launch event, the Chief Minister handed over certificates to two Mahila Mandals from Nadaun—Amlehad and Bhawdan—which will carry out plantation activities on two hectares of forest land and ensure its maintenance for a period of five years. This initiative not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also empowers women by involving them in forest management activities.

In addition to the “Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana,” the Chief Minister launched the “Green Adoption Scheme.” In its initial phase, Ambuja Company will undertake plantation work on 25 hectares, while the Adani Foundation and UltraTech would adopt 10 hectares each. Certificates were handed over to these organizations as a mark of official recognition, encouraging private enterprises, corporate houses and governmental organizations to adopt barren forest land as part of their social responsibility.

Addressing the shortage of forest personnel, the Chief Minister emphasized the appointment of Van Mitras based on merit, with many with many young women taking the lead in securing these roles. The government is committed to framing future policies that safeguard their careers and recognize them as true guardians of the forests. The Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s focus on women empowerment, citing the increased reservation for women in police recruitment and the appointment of women in key administrative positions in Lahaul-Spiti.

These initiatives reflect the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community participation in forest management. By involving local communities, especially women and youth, in afforestation and forest conservation activities, Himachal Pradesh aims to create a more sustainable and equitable future for its residents.
