Hero Future Energies Selected for Bhubaneswar Hydrogen Valley Project

Hero Future Energies (HFE), the renewable energy arm of the Hero Group, has been selected as a consortia partner for the Bhubaneswar Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC), marking a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions in India. In collaboration with IIT-Bhubaneswar, HFE will serve as the industry partner, focusing on pioneering initiatives such as direct reduction of iron and promoting heavy-duty mobility through renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies.

The Bhubaneswar-HVIC aims to harness hydrogen production via electrolysis, targeting applications in the steel and mobility sectors. This initiative comes as part of the government’s ambitious plan to establish 15 hydrogen valley innovation clusters across India. Recently, the government allocated Rs 200 crore, with Rs 50 crore earmarked for each of the four upcoming green hydrogen valley projects in Kerala, Pune, Bhubaneswar, and Jodhpur over a span of five years.

Supported by the Department of Science and Technology, these projects are poised to scale up to commercial operations and will be managed by a dedicated Section 8 company to ensure sustainability beyond the initial funding period. A hydrogen valley is defined as a geographical area strategically integrated across the hydrogen value chain—from production to storage, transport, and distribution—serving multiple sectors and applications. The primary objective behind establishing such valleys is to catalyse research, foster innovation, and enhance the capabilities of scientific and industrial stakeholders. By demonstrating clean hydrogen solutions, these initiatives aim to pave the way for broader deployment at local, regional, and national levels, thereby contributing significantly to India’s clean energy transition.

Hero Future Energies’ involvement underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable energy practices and leveraging green hydrogen technology to address critical industrial and mobility challenges. This partnership not only reinforces HFE’s leadership in the renewable energy sector but also aligns with India’s vision of achieving energy security and environmental sustainability through innovative, homegrown solutions.

The Bhubaneswar Hydrogen Valley project holds promise for transforming the region into a hub of technological innovation and economic growth, positioning India as a global leader in clean energy initiatives.
