Haryana plans new link to Global City

The Haryana government is planning a major road connectivity upgrade for the under-construction Global City project in Gurugram, aiming to directly link it with the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The move is expected to ease access and improve mobility for future residential and commercial users of the megaproject, which spans over 1,000 acres across multiple sectors.

According to planning officials, a 60-metre-wide road has been proposed along a recently constructed drainage channel in Narsingpur. This new corridor would bridge the Delhi-Jaipur highway near Narsingpur with the Global City site, which already has links via Pataudi Road and the Dwarka Expressway. Authorities say this additional access route will be crucial to managing the scale and expected density of the upcoming mixed-use urban zone.

The land earmarked for this proposed road falls within Khandsa and Mohammadpur Jharsa villages. While some plots are already owned by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC), other parcels are privately held and remain under legal scrutiny. Despite the challenges, officials note that the road is a high-priority component of the overall city design and will feature prominently in an upcoming district coordination committee meeting to be chaired by the state’s urban development advisors.

Global City is envisioned as a futuristic urban cluster featuring commercial towers, residential blocks, retail hubs, green belts, healthcare and educational institutions, and innovation zones. It will also house cultural spaces, hospitality facilities, water bodies, and an exhibition-cum-convention centre. The development is spread across sectors 36, 36B, 37, and 37B in Gurugram, with a planned built-up area of 12 million square metres.

Work on the first phase of the project is already underway on a 587-acre parcel. This phase includes the construction of 13 kilometres of internal roads, a landscape plan across 82 acres, nearly 12 kilometres of potable water infrastructure, a 12-kilometre recycled water pipeline, a 10-kilometre utility tunnel, and over 26 kilometres of stormwater drainage. Completion of this trunk infrastructure is targeted for December 2026.

Experts suggest that enhanced connectivity will not only bolster the viability of Global City but also reduce traffic pressure on existing arterial roads. However, concerns remain over the legal status of some land parcels and the need for fair compensation and rehabilitation plans for affected stakeholders. As Gurugram continues to grow as a major urban and economic centre, developments like Global City and its associated infrastructure highlight the balancing act between expansion and sustainable planning.
