Harbour Line Shut Between Wadala and CSMT in Mumbai

The Harbour Line, a crucial artery of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, was particularly affected, with services between Wadala Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) suspended owing to inundation at Masjid station.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, forecasting continued heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that areas like Nariman Point received over 100 mm of rain within a few hours, exacerbating the city’s drainage challenges. Commuters faced delays and cancellations across the Central and Western Railway lines as well. While the Central Railway’s main line experienced delays due to waterlogged tracks, the Western Railway reported point failures and signal issues, further complicating the morning commute.

In response to the disruptions, authorities have deployed emergency teams to pump out water from the affected tracks and restore normalcy. However, officials have urged commuters to check for real-time updates and avoid non-essential travel during this period of inclement weather. The current situation underscores the pressing need for Mumbai to bolster its infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events, especially in the face of climate change. Urban planners and civic authorities are being called upon to implement sustainable drainage solutions and enhance the city’s preparedness for future monsoon seasons.
