Halwara Airport Nears Finish Line, Faces Minor Hurdles

Ludhiana’s long-anticipated Halwara International Airport is edging closer to its grand opening, though final completion is now projected to be delayed by approximately a month. Officials have confirmed that the project is nearing the finish line, with about 90% of the construction work completed.

However, recent weather conditions have disrupted operations, particularly affecting the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) portion of the work. The Public Works Department (PWD), managing the project through multiple agencies, has indicated that civil works are largely finished. The first phase of the link taxiway is operational, yet the completion of the second phase remains pending. A PWD official revealed that the installation of a trolley gate—a critical feature allowing aircraft to access the airport from the runway—has been completed. However, a minor portion of the boundary wall still needs to be removed before the project can proceed further.

The PWD is preparing to submit a request to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for the formal transfer of the airport. An AAI team recently inspected the site and is expected to conduct a follow-up visit after the PWD completes the remaining minor adjustments. The new terminal at Halwara will feature a longer runway and an Instrument Landing System (ILS), which will enhance landing capabilities in low visibility conditions, especially during winter fog. Local residents and officials are eagerly anticipating the airport’s operational phase. Ludhiana’s Deputy Commissioner, Sakshi Sawhney, has confirmed that civil preparations are on track and the shift from Sahnewal airbase is underway. The new airport promises significant benefits for local industrialists, traders, students, and residents by providing more direct flight options and improving connectivity.
