Guwahati Airport Handles Record 952 MT Cargo With Growth Surge

Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) has achieved a landmark in India’s regional air logistics by handling a record 952 metric tonnes (MT) of cargo in a single month, marking a 13.2 per cent surge compared to its previous peak. The July performance reflects the airport’s growing role as a sustainable trade and transport hub for the Northeast.

Officials from the Guwahati International Airport Ltd (GIAL) attributed the unprecedented growth to operational efficiency, better route connectivity, and targeted engagement with trade stakeholders. A notable 15.26 per cent rise in inbound cargo volumes powered the record, with Delhi and Bengaluru emerging as the largest contributors. Experts highlight that the surge in inbound shipments underlines the region’s increasing economic integration with India’s major metropolitan markets.

On the outbound front, destinations like Agartala and Imphal led the growth, followed by Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Outbound cargo movement grew by 5.24 per cent, reinforcing the airport’s role as a gateway for agricultural produce, handicrafts, and other region-specific goods to wider domestic markets. Logistics analysts note that this growth not only boosts local enterprises but also reduces carbon footprint by optimising regional transport chains over long-haul trucking. The record handling has been made possible through streamlined cargo processing systems, upgraded terminal infrastructure, and enhanced cold storage facilities for perishable goods. Airport management stated that investments in automation, energy-efficient lighting, and digital cargo tracking are further reducing turnaround times while aligning with sustainable aviation practices.

Industry experts view this achievement as part of a broader transformation in India’s Northeast, where improved infrastructure and policy focus are enabling cities like Guwahati to serve as anchor points for eco-friendly, inclusive, and equitable supply chains. This shift is especially important for the agricultural and small manufacturing sectors, which benefit from faster market access and reduced wastage through efficient air cargo handling.Looking ahead, the airport plans to scale capacity further with renewable-powered infrastructure, green building standards, and expanded cargo bay facilities to meet anticipated demand. Officials believe these measures will help position Guwahati as a logistics hub of national significance while supporting India’s goal of creating climate-resilient transport systems. The July milestone not only strengthens the airport’s credentials as a high-performing logistics node but also underscores the economic potential of integrating Northeast India more deeply into the country’s sustainable trade network. For traders and producers in the region, the cargo growth translates into better market reach, higher competitiveness, and a tangible step toward greener, faster, and more reliable logistics.
