Gurugram SPR Elevated Corridor To Ease City Traffic
Urban infrastructure planners in Haryana have initiated the procurement process for a major road upgrade in Gurugram, inviting bids for a ₹755-crore project to construct a Gurugram SPR elevated corridor along a busy stretch of the Southern Peripheral Road. The proposed infrastructure aims to improve traffic flow on one of the city’s most important east-west mobility links while supporting the region’s expanding residential and commercial zones. The project focuses on a 4.2-kilometre section between Vatika Chowk and National Highway-48, an area that has seen significant urban development in recent years. Authorities expect the elevated corridor to create a signal-free traffic route above the existing roadway, enabling vehicles to bypass multiple intersections that currently contribute to congestion during peak travel hours.
According to planning documents released by the metropolitan development authority, the proposed Gurugram SPR elevated corridor will include a multilane elevated carriageway supported by a network of service roads at ground level. The design includes primary and secondary lanes running parallel to the elevated structure, allowing local traffic, commercial access and neighbourhood connectivity to function independently from through-traffic moving along the corridor. Transport planners say this layered road design has become increasingly common in rapidly growing Indian cities where traffic volumes often exceed the capacity of traditional arterial roads. By separating local and long-distance vehicle movement, elevated corridors can reduce travel times and improve traffic predictability along heavily used routes. The infrastructure upgrade is also expected to strengthen connectivity between several key mobility corridors in Gurugram’s expanding urban grid. Once operational, the Gurugram SPR elevated corridor will connect with major regional highways and expressways, including National Highway-48 and the Gurugram-Sohna Elevated Corridor. The road link is also expected to improve access to areas connected to the Dwarka Expressway, one of the NCR’s largest emerging real estate corridors.
Officials overseeing the project say the corridor will include dedicated entry and exit ramps at major junctions to facilitate smooth traffic dispersal. An interchange near the highway is planned to ensure uninterrupted connectivity with the national highway network, while additional infrastructure at Vatika Chowk is expected to further integrate the route with surrounding arterial roads. Urban development analysts note that infrastructure investments along the Southern Peripheral Road reflect the changing spatial dynamics of Gurugram’s growth. The corridor has evolved into a major urban axis connecting residential sectors, technology parks and emerging business districts, increasing pressure on the city’s road network. However, mobility experts caution that road infrastructure alone may not fully resolve congestion challenges in rapidly expanding metropolitan areas. Integrating high-capacity public transport systems, improving last-mile connectivity and encouraging sustainable travel modes will remain essential components of long-term urban mobility planning.
The construction contract for the Gurugram SPR elevated corridor is expected to include a development timeline of roughly two and a half years from the award of work. As Gurugram continues to grow as a major economic centre within the National Capital Region, projects like this will play a key role in shaping how the city manages traffic demand, urban expansion and future mobility needs.
