Gurugram Metro Expansion: ₹5,452.72 Crore Project to Begin in May 2025, Adding 27 New Stations

The Haryana government has unveiled plans for the expansion of the Gurugram Metro. The project, expected to begin construction on May 1, 2025, is set to be a game-changer in the city’s urban transport landscape. With an investment of ₹5,452.72 crore, the project will see the addition of 27 elevated stations and a 28.5-kilometre route, connecting key hubs like Millennium City Centre, Old Gurugram, and Cyber City.

The new metro line is set to transform the way people move around Gurugram, significantly improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion. The metro system is expected to cater to around 540,000 passengers daily, with projections estimating a rise to 726,000 by 2031, illustrating the growing need for enhanced public transport in this rapidly developing city. The ambitious project is being funded through a joint contribution from both the central and Haryana state governments. The central government is contributing ₹896.19 crore, while the Haryana government will provide ₹4,556.53 crore to make this vision a reality. This partnership underscores the importance of the Gurugram Metro expansion, not just for the city but also for the region’s broader development. The metro will initially operate with three-coach trains, and the system is designed to expand to six-coach trains as demand increases. The trains will utilise Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, ensuring efficient, safe, and reliable operations. The maximum operational speed of the trains will be 80 km/h, enhancing the speed and comfort of commuters.

Starting at Millennium City Centre, the new metro line will connect some of the most important locations in the city, including the Railway Station, Sector-22, and Cyber City. These connections will not only ease the daily commute for thousands of residents but also strengthen Gurugram’s position as a hub for business, technology, and commerce in the region. The 27 stations on the new line are strategically located to ensure accessibility to major residential and commercial areas, improving transport efficiency across the city. The expansion is also expected to provide a much-needed boost to the city’s economy by improving mobility, making it easier for people to travel between key commercial zones and residential neighbourhoods. As part of the expansion, several critical infrastructure developments will be undertaken. The project includes the construction of five underpasses and flyovers to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, particularly during the construction phase. These developments are designed to mitigate congestion and ensure minimal disruption to the existing transport network.

The project’s timeline for completion spans over four years, with full operational status expected by 2029. This ambitious timeframe reflects the urgency and the significance of the project in Gurugram’s urban planning strategy. By enhancing the metro network, the government hopes to address the city’s chronic traffic issues, while also promoting sustainable urban mobility in the long run. Gurugram’s metro expansion is an essential step towards modernising the city’s infrastructure to accommodate its rapidly growing population. As more people rely on public transport, the metro will play a pivotal role in shaping the city’s future, reducing congestion on roads and improving the quality of life for commuters. Residents and businesses alike are optimistic about the upcoming metro line, which is set to revolutionise travel in one of India’s most dynamic cities. With the expected start of construction in May 2025, Gurugram is well on its way to becoming a more connected, efficient, and sustainable urban centre.
