Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) is set to ramp up construction on the city’s long-awaited metro corridor from mid-November, with the Sector 33 casting yard near Hero Honda Chowk becoming fully operational. The casting yard will serve as the central hub for precasting viaduct segments, U-girders, and pier caps required for the elevated corridor, enabling continuous 24-hour operations.
Officials said that initial load testing of ten trial piles is currently underway across various locations along the proposed alignment. Full-scale construction, including the digging of foundation piles to support metro pillars, will commence once the test results meet regulatory norms. “The casting yard work has started and is expected to be fully functional by mid-November, allowing uninterrupted production of structural elements,” said a senior GMRL official. The Sector 33 facility, spread over three hectares, has been designed as a self-sufficient hub. It includes casting beds, curing zones, a quality control laboratory, storage areas, and an equipment maintenance section. To support round-the-clock operations, residential accommodation for approximately 1,200 workers has been arranged on-site. Workers will operate in two shifts, reducing commuting time and ensuring steady productivity, officials noted.
The metro project, contracted to Dilip Buildcon, officially began in early September, following its inauguration by senior state and central officials. Since then, work has progressed with the excavation of the first test pile outside the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) office, followed by the initiation of ten additional piles along strategic points of the alignment. The operational casting yard is expected to accelerate production of key components, including precast viaduct segments and pier caps, essential for the elevated corridor linking key residential and commercial areas. “We are also upgrading nearby infrastructure, including drains under the service lane, to facilitate smooth transportation of precast elements via heavy trucks and trailers,” the GMRL official added.
City planners emphasise that this phase of construction is a significant step towards creating a sustainable, eco-friendly public transport system that will reduce vehicular congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve connectivity across Gurugram. With on-site residential facilities and continuous production, officials expect the accelerated schedule to deliver measurable efficiency gains and timely project completion. As the Gurugram Metro project moves into full swing, stakeholders are optimistic that the corridor will become a reliable backbone for urban mobility, connecting residential clusters to business hubs while fostering a zero-carbon, commuter-friendly urban environment.
