Gurugram Gears Up for Major Drainage Overhaul

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is poised to engage a consultant to overhaul its drainage infrastructure through a meticulous four-step study and plan revamp. Acknowledging the city’s perennial flooding woes caused by overwhelmed drainage systems, GMDA has expedited efforts to solicit proposals from consultancy firms. A decision on the chosen agency is expected within 15 days, as reported by Economic Times.

The consultant’s mandate extends beyond a mere assessment of existing drainage systems; it encompasses the formulation of a robust drainage network plan integrated into Gurugram’s Development Plan 2031. This strategic blueprint aims to fortify the drainage infrastructure’s resilience and capacity, historically faltering under the strain of initial heavy rains each year.Critical areas under scrutiny include the capacity assessment of key drains along NH-48, Pataudi Road, and the Delhi-Rewari railway line, crucial arteries prone to waterlogging. The study will also evaluate discharge mechanisms into larger water systems such as the Najafgarh Drain, crucial for mitigating flood risks.

Additionally, the consultant will analyze the catchment areas outlined in Gurugram’s expansive development plans, spanning sectors like New Gurgaon, Manesar, and industrial zones. Detailed topographic surveys will map the city’s terrain, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of water flow dynamics across different zones.Despite past studies, Gurugram’s drainage woes persist, underscoring the urgency for a well-coordinated and effectively executed plan. The upcoming drainage strategy assumes greater significance as Gurugram continues its rapid urban expansion, necessitating robust infrastructure to support sustained growth. An official highlighted the inclusive approach of seeking public feedback once the draft plan is formulated, emphasizing transparency and community involvement in shaping the final project report.
