Authorities in Gurugram have initiated a new phase of electric mobility infrastructure expansion, with plans to install multiple public charging facilities across the city in the coming months. The move is expected to strengthen the region’s electric mobility ecosystem and support the transition to cleaner urban transport systems. Under an agreement between the city’s municipal authority and a government-backed energy services agency, the first phase will see the installation of Gurugram EV charging stations at strategic public locations within approximately six months. Officials involved in the project indicated that the initial rollout will consist of a network designed to support both fast and standard charging for electric vehicles.
The first batch is expected to include around 40 charging points distributed across several stations. These will include high-speed charging units as well as slower chargers designed for longer parking durations. The facilities are being planned to cater to different vehicle categories, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger cars, reflecting the growing diversity of the electric mobility market. Several prominent locations across the city have been shortlisted for the first phase. These include commercial zones, public parks and market areas that attract regular vehicle traffic. Urban planners involved in the initiative say selecting high-visibility sites can improve user confidence in electric mobility while encouraging adoption among residents and businesses. The deployment of Gurugram EV charging stations forms part of the city’s broader strategy to reduce vehicular emissions and improve air quality in the National Capital Region. Gurugram has experienced rapid urban growth over the past two decades, leading to a sharp rise in private vehicle ownership. As a result, local governments have increasingly prioritised cleaner transport technologies and supporting infrastructure.
The partnership model adopted for the project is designed to reduce the financial burden on municipal authorities. Under the long-term arrangement, the energy services agency will undertake both capital investment and operational responsibilities, while the city administration will facilitate access to land required for charging infrastructure. Officials note that such public-private frameworks are becoming common in India’s emerging electric mobility sector. The charging rollout also complements plans to electrify parts of the city’s public transport system. Charging infrastructure is already being installed at bus depots to support the introduction of electric buses expected to operate in the city in the near future. Dedicated charging slots have been created at one depot currently under development, while another facility planned in a separate sector is also expected to support electric bus operations. In addition to public charging stations, authorities are examining the potential deployment of battery-swapping points across the city. These facilities allow electric two- and three-wheelers to exchange depleted batteries for charged ones, significantly reducing waiting times compared to conventional charging.
Urban mobility experts say expanding the charging ecosystem will be critical to sustaining electric vehicle adoption in rapidly growing cities. As Gurugram prepares for additional phases of infrastructure rollout later this year, the success of the initial Gurugram EV charging stations network could shape future clean transport initiatives across the wider National Capital Region.
