Critical stretches along MG Road and Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road have become perilous for commuters and pedestrians alike, characterized by exposed wires, uncovered manholes, missing drain covers, and poorly managed construction sites. The first heavy downpour of the season exacerbated these conditions, tragically claiming four lives and highlighting glaring negligence by various civic agencies responsible for urban safety.
On Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, numerous drain covers are missing, leaving gaping, six-foot-deep holes directly along the carriageway, posing a constant risk of severe injury or death to pedestrians. This danger is further compounded by dangerously low-hanging exposed electrical wires and unprotected transformer installations lacking essential warning signs or fencing. The threat tragically materialized into fatalities, as four individuals lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents. One victim drowned after falling into an uncovered sewer, while three others were fatally electrocuted after contact with submerged live wires or electrified structures in ankle-to-knee-deep water, underscoring the severe lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure.
Further compounding the civic mess, ongoing drainage construction along the service lane of MG Road near a prominent mall features excavated road portions for stormwater drains without adequate barricades, reflective signs, or caution tape. In response, civic agency officials stated that ground teams have been directed to identify and cover all open drains and manholes, with immediate action on social media complaints. Conversely, power utility representatives denied negligence in the electrocution incidents, affirming proactive safety measures and a dedicated public reporting channel. Ironically, a freshly paved footpath along the same MG Road service lane already features an open manhole.
