Gurgaon gets green light for Rs 141cr infra upgrade

Gurgaon is poised for a significant urban infrastructure upgrade, with the Haryana government clearing projects worth Rs 141 crore aimed at enhancing city-wide safety, improving mobility, and strengthening essential utilities.

At the core of the approval is a long-awaited expansion of the city’s integrated CCTV and adaptive traffic management system — a move expected to bolster real-time surveillance, road safety, and crime prevention. After a delay of nearly three years, Phase 2 of the surveillance project received a green signal during a high-powered purchase committee meeting chaired by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), which has already implemented Phase 1 involving 1,200 cameras at 218 locations by August 2022, will now deploy an additional 2,722 cameras across 258 new sites.

The expansion, estimated at Rs 109 crore, had been held up since March 2024 due to pending approvals, despite tenders being floated. GMDA officials confirmed that execution will begin promptly after contractor finalisation. “This next phase will significantly improve public safety and traffic enforcement across Gurgaon,” a senior official noted, adding that the system would also help reduce congestion through intelligent traffic signal control. In tandem with digital surveillance, Gurgaon will witness two other crucial upgrades: a Rs 17.3 crore power substation at Chandu Budhera Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and a Rs 14.7 crore project to develop cycle tracks and pedestrian walkways near the city’s fast-developing southern sectors.

The new 66kV substation is designed to power three upcoming filtration units at the Chandu Budhera plant. Spread across 15 acres, it will include two 10 MVA transformers and two auxiliary transformers, ensuring uninterrupted clean water supply for thousands of residents. One filtration unit is already partially functional while two more are in the pipeline. Until the substation is operational — expected within 12 months — a temporary connection from Daultabad will continue to supply power.Meanwhile, the non-motorised transport (NMT) project aims to reimagine daily commutes along sectors 58–61 and 59–61, close to Golf Course Extension Road. With a nine-month timeline, the cycle tracks and footpaths are expected to encourage low-emission travel, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and make Gurgaon safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Not all proposals made it through the approval process. Two critical sewerage upgrades — one along Sohna Road and the other linking sectors 33–34 to Basai and Hero Honda Chowk — were deferred after bid amounts far exceeded GMDA estimates. Officials have indicated fresh tenders will be floated with revised costs, to avoid further delays in addressing overloaded and deteriorating drainage systems.

Together, the approved projects reflect a broader state-level push to equip Gurgaon with infrastructure aligned with the needs of a growing, eco-conscious urban population. From digital surveillance and smart power supply to green mobility infrastructure, the city’s civic blueprint is gradually shifting toward resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity. However, delays in sewerage and waste water upgrades continue to be a bottleneck that city planners will need to address with greater urgency.
