Gujarat to Upgrade Major Highways

Gandhinagar: The state government has unveiled an ambitious plan to convert the current four-lane Ahmedabad-Sanand and Ahmedabad-Mehsana highways into six-lane thoroughfares, with a combined investment of ₹1,868 crore. This significant infrastructure upgrade aims to alleviate traffic congestion and accommodate the growing vehicular load on these crucial routes.

Of the total outlay, ₹668 crore will be allocated for the 28-kilometre stretch between Ahmedabad and Sanand, while ₹1,200 crore will be spent on the 51.6-kilometre stretch between Ahmedabad and Mehsana. Government sources indicate that technical studies for these projects have been completed, and the process of finalising contractors is imminent. “The tender process for these projects will commence shortly, and we anticipate that construction work on both highways will begin within the next three months,” said a government insider. The Ahmedabad-Sanand highway has experienced a surge in traffic due to its strategic role in connecting the city to Saurashtra and Kutch. Additionally, substantial real estate developments along this route have further increased vehicular traffic. “The highway’s expansion to six lanes will significantly improve traffic flow and reduce travel time,” commented an official.

Similarly, the Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway, a vital link between Gujarat and northern states such as Rajasthan, has been witnessing heavy commercial vehicle traffic for several years. The six-lane expansion is expected to alleviate congestion and enhance the efficiency of goods and passenger movement on this critical route. “The highway’s expansion will not only reduce congestion but also bolster economic activities by facilitating smoother transportation of goods,” noted a source. This initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure to support economic growth and improve the quality of life for its residents. The planned expansion is part of a broader strategy to upgrade the state’s transport network, which is crucial for sustaining economic momentum and attracting further investments.

The projects are expected to bring multiple benefits, including reduced travel time, enhanced safety, and improved connectivity. Additionally, the construction phase will generate employment opportunities, contributing to the local economy. The government is optimistic that these infrastructure improvements will spur further economic development in the region. The state government’s decision to invest ₹1,868 crore in upgrading the Ahmedabad-Sanand and Ahmedabad-Mehsana highways to six lanes reflects a proactive approach to addressing traffic congestion and supporting economic growth. As the tender process begins and construction commences, these projects are set to transform the transportation landscape in Gujarat, offering long-term benefits to commuters and businesses alike.
