Gujarat to Build Future-Ready Transport Corridors

Gujarat is set to witness a transformative overhaul of its road infrastructure, with the state government unveiling a bold plan to address highway congestion and introduce cutting-edge transport corridors. A substantial Rs 24,705 crore has been allocated towards modernising the state’s highways, with a sharp focus on creating high-speed corridors and expressways aimed at bolstering connectivity and driving economic growth.

One of the standout features of the initiative is the ambitious Rs 1,020 crore allocated for the construction of new expressways and high-speed corridors, which will span across 1,367 kilometres. Among these, the Namo Shakti Expressway is particularly noteworthy, set to connect Banaskantha to the coast, significantly improving access to coastal regions. Another major project, the Somnath-Dwarka Expressway, aims to enhance connectivity between key pilgrimage sites, facilitating smoother and faster travel for religious tourists. Further cementing the state’s infrastructure goals, the budget outlines the creation of high-speed corridors designed to link some of Gujarat’s most important tourist and industrial destinations. This includes routes such as Ahmedabad to Dakor, Surat to Sachin-Navsari, and Rajkot to Bhavnagar, among others. These corridors are expected to streamline both tourism and trade, stimulating growth in these vital sectors.

Additionally, a robust Rs 937 crore investment is earmarked for the development of a 50 km high-speed corridor between Bhuj and Nakhatrana. Complementing this will be an Rs 278 crore allocation for projects connecting major industrial and tourist hubs across Gujarat, further enhancing the state’s connectivity framework. The government has also put forward Rs 85 crore for the expansion and enhancement of the Gandhinagar-Pethapur-Mahudi Road, which includes the construction of a flyover and widening it to a four-lane road. Furthermore, the ongoing ‘crossing-free cities’ initiative will see 29 railway overbridge projects being developed at a cost of Rs 1,659 crore. An additional Rs 545 crore will be dedicated to building overbridges and underpasses to eliminate railway crossings in urban areas, significantly reducing traffic congestion and improving safety.

Two new greenfield expressways — the Namo Shakti Expressway and the Somnath-Dwarka Expressway — are set to further enhance Gujarat’s transportation network. These routes will not only improve connectivity between key urban centres but will also connect to the Union Government’s coastal highway, marking a significant leap towards modernising the state’s infrastructure. While these developments signal Gujarat’s bold step towards future-proofing its transport infrastructure, the focus will likely be on delivering these projects on time, ensuring that the promise of faster, safer, and more efficient connectivity is realised for residents and businesses alike.
