Gujarat To Build Dahod And Dwarka Airports Boosting Growth 2025
Gujarat is gearing up to transform its aviation landscape with the development of two new greenfield airports at Dahod and Dwarka, signalling a decisive push to strengthen regional connectivity, tourism, and industrial growth by 2025. Officials said these projects align with the state’s long-term ambition to position itself as western India’s leading aviation hub.
The Dahod airport is expected to emerge as a gateway for eastern Gujarat, where industrial activity has been steadily growing. Planned to cater to both passenger and cargo needs, the airport will reduce the burden on existing hubs in Ahmedabad and Indore while offering industries quicker access to markets. Aviation experts believe that the project will also enable faster supply chain movement, supporting manufacturing clusters and agro-based industries.
Dwarka, known for its religious significance and as a coastal destination, is also set to benefit from a dedicated airport about 12 kilometres from the city centre. The facility is projected to reduce the travel time of pilgrims and tourists who currently face long rail journeys stretching up to 17 hours from cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Beyond religious tourism, the airport will play a strategic role in coastal defence and maritime trade, broadening its economic impact.
These two projects are part of Gujarat’s wider aviation expansion roadmap. Alongside them, the Dholera International Airport is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, while existing airports in Ahmedabad and Rajkot are undergoing upgrades to handle growing passenger volumes. State officials have identified 11 other greenfield locationsn including Morbi, Dhordo, and Rajpipla for feasibility studies, signalling the scale of long-term investment in this sector.
The expansion comes at a time when Gujarat’s air traffic has surged by nearly 39 per cent in 2024–25, reflecting an urgent demand for additional capacity. Analysts suggest that this infrastructure growth will not only provide passenger convenience but also foster multi-sectoral gains by supporting logistics, trade, tourism, and defence. The state’s policy planners argue that aviation-driven development could attract global investors, create jobs, and enhance Gujarat’s competitiveness in sectors such as hospitality, manufacturing, and agro-processing.
With the new aviation projects anchored in sustainable planning and connectivity goals, Gujarat is looking to integrate its regional networks with national and international routes. While challenges of execution and environmental impact remain, officials insist that the projects are designed with long-term resilience in mind. As the state accelerates its infrastructure drive, Dahod and Dwarka are set to stand out as symbols of Gujarat’s ambition to balance economic growth with regional accessibility.
