Ahmedabad NABARD Invites Rs26 Lakh Bids for Green Rooftop Solar Project
Gujarat has taken another significant leap in renewable energy infrastructure as NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC, partially commissioned two major solar projects in the Khavda region of the state, marking a cumulative capacity addition of 288.9 megawatts (MW). The announcement was made on June 28, 2025, and aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals under various green energy missions.
The first project to go live is a 142.2 MW segment of the 300 MW Khavda Solar Energy Project, part of the larger 450 MW Hybrid Tranche V scheme. This tranche is structured to support hybrid generation, blending solar with other clean energy sources to maximise efficiency and grid stability. Simultaneously, NGEL also initiated commercial operations for a 146.7 MW portion of the 1255 MW Khavda-I Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, developed under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) Scheme Phase-II Tranche-III.
Both projects are spearheaded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, the project execution arm under NGEL, which has been tasked with scaling India’s utility-scale clean energy footprint across high-potential zones. This dual commissioning signals NTPC’s aggressive push into high-volume solar development, especially in Khavda, which has rapidly emerged as one of India’s most critical solar clusters. The region is being earmarked for ultra-mega solar parks and is central to the government’s solar deployment blueprint for 2030.
While full capacity commissioning is still underway, the partial commercial operation declaration (COD) ensures that clean energy generated from these sections will now contribute to the national grid, offering both energy supply and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) where applicable. NTPC Green Energy, through NGEL, has been leading India’s clean energy shift by deploying advanced solar, wind, and hybrid technologies across several states. Its CPSU-linked projects also underscore India’s intent to transition government procurement to green energy sources, reinforcing public sector leadership in sustainability.
The new solar additions come as India accelerates efforts to meet its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, part of its commitment under the Paris Agreement and the Panchamrit pledges made at COP26. From a project viability standpoint, Khavda offers high solar irradiance, flat terrain, and established grid interconnectivity—making it an ideal location for rapid deployment of solar PV projects. As India’s largest energy conglomerate, NTPC Limited continues to position itself as the driving force behind the nation’s transition to a low-carbon power economy. The company aims to contribute 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, with the Khavda projects playing a crucial role in this roadmap.
With nearly 289 MW already commissioned and more underway, NTPC’s Khavda projects set the tone for scalable, grid-connected, clean power generation—pushing India further along the path toward energy independence and environmental stewardship.
