The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has successfully launched its seventh steel bridge, marking a pivotal step in the development of the country’s first bullet train corridor.
The 70-meter-long Open Web Girder (OWG) bridge was installed over the Dedicated Freight Corridor tracks near Vadodara, Gujarat, showcasing the project’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge engineering with sustainable infrastructure development. The bridge, weighing approximately 674 metric tons and measuring 13 meters in height and 14 meters in width, was fabricated in Durgapur, West Bengal. After meticulous planning and coordination, it was transported to the installation site using specialized trailers. The launching operation was executed within a 12-hour window, utilizing intermittent blocks on the freight corridor to minimize disruption to ongoing operations. This precise execution underscores the project’s dedication to efficiency and minimal environmental impact.
A notable aspect of this bridge is its design and construction, which incorporated approximately 28,800 units of Tor-Shear Type High Strength bolts, ensuring structural integrity and longevity. The application of a C5 system painting and inclusion of elastomeric bearings further enhance the bridge’s durability, aiming for a lifespan of 100 years. The assembly was conducted at an elevation of 18 meters on temporary trestles, with the bridge being maneuvered into position using semi-automatic jacks with a capacity of 250 tons, demonstrating the project’s reliance on advanced engineering techniques.
This achievement is part of a broader initiative to construct 28 steel bridges along the 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. The successful launch of the seventh bridge not only signifies progress in the project’s timeline but also reflects a commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, with significant contributions from domestic industries in fabrication and assembly.
