Gujarat RTO strike ends, services back on track
The statewide strike by Gujarat’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) technical officers came to an end on Tuesday after the government assured them of addressing their long-standing demands regarding probation, promotion, and service conditions. The protest, which saw around 700 officers from 39 RTOs participating, had brought crucial transport services like driving tests, vehicle registration, and license issuance to a standstill. The strike, which began with a ‘No Login Day’ on Monday followed by mass casual leave on Tuesday, severely disrupted operations, especially in Ahmedabad’s key RTOs at Subhash Bridge, Vastral, and Bhadaj. Applicants, particularly those requiring urgent documentation, faced significant delays and inconvenience. However, following negotiations between the Technical Officers Association and senior officials at the Gandhinagar Transport Commissioner’s office, a resolution was reached, and the officers resumed their duties post-noon, much to the relief of citizens.
The core of the strike revolved around grievances related to career progression. Officers had been demanding clarity on their probation period, fair promotion policies, and resolution of pending inquiries that had hindered career growth. Over the years, multiple representations were made to the state government, but action remained limited. Frustrated by delays, the association decided to take a firm stand. An association member stated, “We have been raising concerns regarding probation, promotion, transfers, and inquiries for a long time, but there was no concrete action. This time, we have received firm assurances, which is why we have returned to our duties.” The impact of the strike was felt across Gujarat, with long queues forming at RTO offices, causing distress among applicants, especially those in urgent need of driving licences and vehicle transfers. The government’s assurance came at a crucial time, ensuring that transport services did not remain paralysed for an extended period.
From a civic standpoint, the disruption exposed the fragile nature of public service delivery when bureaucratic disputes arise. The transport sector is a critical component of urban mobility, and any delay in RTO services has ripple effects on daily life, particularly for professionals, businesses, and logistics operators who rely on timely approvals.
