Gujarat prepares Suzuki first global electric transport launch on 26 August

Gujarat is set to script a defining moment in India’s electric mobility journey with the launch of Suzuki’s first global battery electric vehicle on 26 August. The event, which will take place at Hansalpur near Ahmedabad, marks India’s emergence as a global hub for the Japanese automaker’s transition to clean mobility. The new model, branded the “e VITARA”, will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant and exported to more than 100 international markets, including Europe and Japan. Officials describe the initiative as a significant milestone in India’s Make in India programme, as it places the state at the forefront of the global electric vehicle ecosystem.

Alongside the launch, the state will witness the start of localised production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki. Experts confirmed that this step will ensure more than 80 percent of battery value is now manufactured within India, reducing import dependency and aligning with the country’s goal of achieving self-reliance in green technology.

Experts from the railways department said the completion of doubling and gauge conversion works will enable faster passenger services and higher freight capacity, supporting both trade and commuter convenience.Urban connectivity will also receive a boost with the widening of the Viramgam–Khudad–Rampura road and the construction of six-lane underpasses and bridges across Ahmedabad. City planners said these measures are essential for easing congestion and improving air quality, particularly in fast-growing urban clusters.

Energy distribution modernisation projects worth more than Rs 1,000 crore will cover Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Mehsana. Officials explained that the upgrades, which include transformer protection and network strengthening, will ensure fewer breakdowns and greater reliability of supply. Complementing this, housing projects under PMAY (Urban) and slum rehabilitation initiatives will support equitable urbanisation in one of India’s most dynamic states. The launch of Suzuki’s electric vehicle from Gujarat underscores not only industrial growth but also India’s long-term ambition to transition towards a sustainable, carbon-neutral mobility future. Industry experts say that the state’s progress reflects how global automotive partnerships, when rooted in domestic manufacturing, can create a new green industrial ecosystem for India.
