Gujarat has been placed on high alert after eight fresh Covid-19 cases were reported across the state, prompting immediate action from health authorities.
Seven cases were detected in Ahmedabad and one in Kadi, with patients ranging from a two-year-old girl to a 72-year-old man. All patients are currently stable and in home isolation. The state’s health department has reactivated key Covid infrastructure across major cities to prevent any surge in infections. In Ahmedabad, which has emerged as the latest epicentre, a 1,200-bed Covid-dedicated facility at the Civil Hospital has been made operational. The hospital is equipped with oxygen support at every bed and two 20,000-litre oxygen tanks on standby. “We are fully equipped and there is no need for panic,” said Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Civil Hospital Ahmedabad. “The virus is still around. Citizens must remain cautious and continue to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.” In Rajkot, although no fresh cases have been reported, a 20-bed isolation ward has been prepared at the Civil Hospital, complete with oxygen, ventilators, and essential supplies. Authorities stated that the ward can be expanded to accommodate up to 200 patients if required.
“We’ve activated the infrastructure in advance,” said Dr. Mahendra Chavda, Media Coordinator, Rajkot Civil Hospital. “People should stay alert but not fearful. We’re fully prepared.” Vadodara’s Sayaji Hospital has set up a 22-bed isolation ward despite reporting no new cases. With a total capacity of 1,513 beds and equipped with large oxygen tanks and ventilator support, the hospital is ready to convert its emergency ward into a Covid unit if necessary. “Even in the absence of current cases, preparedness is key,” said RMO Hitendra Chauhan. “We’ve stocked PPE kits, emergency medicines, and jumbo oxygen cylinders to handle any potential surge.” In Surat, the Civil Hospital is also on standby. Although no cases have been recorded so far, officials confirmed that isolation facilities could be activated immediately. Health authorities have issued fresh advisories urging citizens to adhere to Covid protocols. People are advised to wear masks in crowded areas, maintain hand hygiene, and avoid self-medication.
“This new variant doesn’t appear deadly but can spread quickly if ignored,” said Dr. Chavda. “Early symptoms like cough or fever should prompt immediate medical consultation.” While the current cases are mild, officials are preparing for any escalation as a precautionary measure. The state’s swift response aims to curb the spread before it grows into a larger outbreak.
