Gujarat launches Rs 2548 crore urban upgrade in Ahmedabad Gandhinagar

Gujarat has rolled out an ambitious urban development push worth ₹2,548 crore in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, aiming to modernise transport corridors, enhance water supply, and create sustainable civic infrastructure. The initiative, launched during the state’s Urban Development Year, highlights a two-decade journey of reshaping city landscapes to meet the demands of a growing population and expanding economy. In Ahmedabad, the scale of transformation is particularly striking. Projects worth ₹2,267 crore are under way to rehabilitate long-neglected neighbourhoods, deliver clean drinking water, and improve traffic management.

More than 1,400 slum households in Ramapir Tekra are being resettled under a housing programme that combines affordability with modern amenities such as common plots, healthcare facilities, solar rooftops, and green energy supply. Urban experts describe this as a step toward equitable living, aligning with India’s vision of climate-resilient and gender-neutral cities.Water security forms another cornerstone of Ahmedabad’s plan. A new pumping station and a 23-kilometre trunk pipeline are expected to ensure potable water for nearly 10 villages in Daskroi taluka. These projects reflect a shift towards building resilient urban systems that can withstand climate pressure while guaranteeing residents equitable access to clean resources.

Traffic modernisation has also taken centre stage. A six-lane controlled-access expressway is being developed to ease congestion, supported by a parallel network of service roads spanning more than 60 kilometres. Officials note that these interventions are not only designed to boost mobility but also to lower vehicular emissions through streamlined traffic flow, aligning with Gujarat’s clean energy and low-carbon mobility goals. In Gandhinagar, projects worth ₹281 crore are being implemented with a focus on civic amenities and resilience against waterlogging. New sewage treatment facilities and drainage networks are expected to benefit thousands of residents in the outskirts, while a major water supply pipeline will provide reliable drinking water to over 55,000 people. Road development parallel to the Metro line further strengthens multimodal connectivity in the state capital, ensuring that future growth remains people-centric and sustainable.

Policy analysts emphasise that this twin-city upgrade is more than just a civil engineering exercise. It symbolises Gujarat’s long-term ambition to position its cities as competitive, resilient, and inclusive urban centres. With a combined focus on upgraded housing, renewable-powered amenities, flood management, and green mobility, the state is moving closer to the vision of zero-carbon, equitable urban living that Indian cities increasingly aspire to.The urban overhaul of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar thus sets a significant benchmark for how Indian metros can balance economic growth with social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
