In a concerted effort to improve public transportation infrastructure in Bengaluru, nearly 29,000 individuals have signed a petition urging the reinstatement of the bus priority lane on the city’s Outer Ring Road. Spearheaded by Greenpeace India, this initiative also calls for the implementation of 11 additional lanes as outlined in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).
Greenpeace India announced on Thursday that the petition, which has garnered significant support from the public, will be formally presented to the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT). The move highlights a growing demand for more effective public transport solutions in Bengaluru.
The bus priority lane, which was previously operational, significantly enhanced the efficiency of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) services. Within a month of its introduction, BMTC recorded an increase of 3,727 passengers, underscoring the lane’s positive impact on commuter convenience and public transport usage. Moreover, the petition advocates for the reinstatement of the bus lanes as a support mechanism for the Shakti scheme, an initiative designed to boost bus ridership among women. The proposed dedicated lanes would ensure more reliable and efficient transportation, especially for those heavily reliant on public buses.
The call for improved public transport infrastructure also resonates with garment workers, who have highlighted the need for better route coverage, increased frequency, and an expanded fleet to accommodate growing demand. Their emphasis on a safe and well-managed bus system reflects broader concerns about public transport accessibility and reliability. Sharat MS from Greenpeace India articulated that the petition aims to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, advocating for a fair and equitable transition to a robust public bus network in Bengaluru. By addressing these concerns, the initiative seeks to foster a more inclusive and efficient transportation system for all city residents. In summary, this petition represents a significant push for enhancing Bengaluru’s public transport infrastructure, with widespread support from the community and a clear focus on improving accessibility and efficiency for all commuters.
