Singapore’s decision in 2019 to halt new data centre construction, followed by policy revisions in 2022 allowing projects only under stringent environmental conditions, demonstrates a proactive model. New facilities must now achieve higher energy efficiency, integrate renewable energy sources, and adopt climate-resilient architectural designs tailored to tropical conditions. This progressive strategy offers valuable insights for other urban hubs worldwide as they navigate the delicate balance between technological advancement and ecological responsibility.The study’s findings, shaped through extensive desk research, stakeholder interviews, and policy workshops involving over 150 participants, outline a transformative path.
It emphasises that technological innovation, forward-thinking regulation, sustainable finance mechanisms, and skilled human capital are pivotal to transitioning towards greener digital infrastructures. The research asserts that adopting such measures is not just a technological necessity but a moral imperative in the fight against climate change.Dr Lai and her international team advocate for embedding sustainability at the heart of smart city development. By integrating climate resilience and sustainable financing frameworks into data centre policies, cities can better safeguard future generations.
