Green Victory Kolkata Candidates Lead Efforts in Plastic Waste Management

Kolkata: The aftermath of the recent poll process in Kolkata has left behind a substantial volume of non-biodegradable waste, predominantly consisting of plastic flex banners and festoons, posing a significant disposal challenge for authorities.

The proliferation of torn banners and flexes cluttering various locations has become a glaring eyesore, with stacks of discarded material encroaching upon road space, exacerbating the city’s waste management woes. Expressing concerns over the staggering amount of plastic waste generated during the election season, officials emphasize the critical need for responsible disposal practices to prevent these materials from clogging landfills. Despite appeals to political parties and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to curb the rampant use of plastic materials and ensure their proper disposal, compliance has been lacking, compelling stakeholders to intensify efforts towards waste management.

However, amidst the prevailing waste crisis, a commendable shift towards eco-friendly practices in electioneering has emerged, spearheaded by several candidates representing diverse political affiliations. Notable among them is Mala Roy, the victorious candidate from Kolkata South, who is leading initiatives to collaborate with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and environmental groups for organizing collection drives targeting plastic flex banners used in campaigns. Roy underscores the imperative of acknowledging and mitigating the adverse environmental impacts of plastic pollution, reiterating a commitment to eco-friendly campaigning practices.

In Kasba, councillor Susanta Ghosh has taken proactive steps to instruct party workers in the systematic removal of flex banners, flags, and posters from public spaces, with a focus on storing the materials for potential reuse or recycling. Similarly, the Trinamool candidate’s team in Jadavpur is actively engaging with the community to raise awareness about proper waste disposal practices, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

Acknowledging the significance of these initiatives, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has extended support by providing logistical assistance and facilitating the transportation of collected plastic waste to appropriate recycling and disposal facilities. Emphasizing the alignment of such efforts with municipal waste management policies, KMC officials commend the dedication of candidates towards promoting environmental sustainability. The positive public response towards these eco-friendly initiatives reflects a growing awareness and appreciation for environmental conservation efforts, underscoring the importance of collective action in combating plastic pollution and fostering a cleaner, greener future for Kolkata.
