Greater Noida is embarking on an ambitious urban development project aimed at transforming a 37-acre circular parking ground, strategically located between Knowledge Park 2 and 3, in close proximity to the India Exposition Centre and Mart, into a modern, multi-purpose venue capable of seamlessly hosting large-scale fairs, exhibitions, and diverse public programmes.
This proactive step by the Greater Noida authority is a direct response to the recurring challenges of traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure that typically arise during major national and international events held at the India Exposition Centre. Recognising the underutilisation of the current space, which primarily serves as a temporary parking area during peak event times, the authority has decided to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the site. This transformative initiative will be guided by the expert recommendations of urban planning and architectural consultants, ensuring the creation of a truly integrated public space that effectively combines structured parking solutions with state-of-the-art facilities designed to accommodate large gatherings.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Noida authority, the proposed concept envisions the development of approximately 75,000 square metres of the 1.5 lakh square metre plot. This development will incorporate intelligently designed structured parking facilities capable of efficiently managing a significant volume of vehicles, alongside essential public amenities such as well-maintained toilet blocks and conveniently located kiosks. The plan also prioritises the creation of peripheral green spaces, contributing to a more environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing environment. At the heart of this revitalised space will be a central open area, specifically designed to serve as the primary venue for hosting a wide array of fairs, exhibitions, cultural events, and various other public programmes, transforming it into a dynamic hub of activity. To bring this vision to fruition, the Greater Noida authority has formally invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from experienced architectural and urban planning firms that possess demonstrable expertise in designing integrated public spaces. The crucial requirement is the ability to seamlessly blend functional structured parking infrastructure with versatile facilities capable of accommodating large public gatherings, ensuring both efficiency and aesthetic appeal. The deadline for the submission of these initial proposals is set for April 16, 2025. Following a thorough evaluation of the submitted EOIs, selected applicants will be invited to present their detailed design ideas and concepts before the authority on April 18, marking a swift progression in the project’s initial stages.
Authority officials have also highlighted the long-term financial sustainability of the project, noting that the redeveloped area will be available for rent when not hosting major events. This strategic approach is expected to provide a consistent source of recurring revenue for the authority, contributing to the overall financial viability of the initiative and enabling further investment in public infrastructure. A primary objective driving this redevelopment project is the critical need to significantly streamline both vehicular and pedestrian movement in and around the site, particularly during large-scale events. To achieve this, the authority is committed to introducing modern and intelligent traffic management systems. These systems will incorporate optimised parking layouts designed for maximum efficiency, clearly demarcated entry and exit points to minimise confusion and bottlenecks, and proactive provisions for effective congestion control, ensuring smoother traffic flow even during peak times. In a related effort to ease existing traffic pressure, a four-lane road is already under active construction around what is currently known as the NASA parking area, replacing the existing, more constrained two-lane road infrastructure.
Recognising the importance of enhancing the overall visitor experience, the comprehensive redevelopment plan includes the construction of strategically located kiosks for food and retail outlets, providing convenient options for attendees. Ample seating and rest areas will also be integrated throughout the venue, ensuring comfort for visitors during events. Furthermore, the plan includes the provision of adequate and well-maintained public toilet facilities, addressing a fundamental need for large gatherings. The Greater Noida authority is also committed to ensuring the availability of essential infrastructure at the redeveloped site. This includes a reliable electricity supply to power events and amenities, a robust water supply for sanitation and other needs, and an efficient drainage system to manage water effectively. Demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability, the project design is also expected to incorporate green measures such as rainwater harvesting systems to conserve water resources and solar lighting solutions to reduce the venue’s carbon footprint, aligning with broader goals of creating eco-friendly and sustainable urban spaces. This holistic approach aims to transform the current parking ground into a vibrant, functional, and environmentally conscious public space that will serve the needs of Greater Noida for years to come.
