Mumbai: In a significant advancement for the Orange Gate-Marine Drive tunnel project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has secured a crucial no objection certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) for the construction of a launch shaft.
This shaft will be located on MbPT land near P D’Mello Road, encompassing a total area of 1.96 hectares, with 0.71 hectares designated as a permanent area and 1.25 hectares as a temporary area. With the NOC in place, MMRDA is poised to transfer the allocated land to the project’s contractor, paving the way for the initiation of tunneling works. The launch shaft, a vertical or near-vertical excavation, will serve as the starting point for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and other tunneling equipment. This essential component of the project allows for the assembly, testing, and launching of the TBM into the ground. Additionally, it will facilitate the removal of excavated material, utilising cranes or conveyor systems.
The proposed tunnel, spanning 9.2 kilometres with 6.52 kilometres dedicated to twin tunnels, will significantly enhance connectivity between the western and eastern parts of Mumbai. Each tunnel, measuring 11 metres in width, will accommodate two lanes for regular traffic and a third lane reserved for emergency purposes. Furthermore, cross passages will be provided between the two tunnels to ensure safety in unforeseen circumstances.
The Rs 7,765 crore project is poised to deliver the shortest route linking the western and eastern sectors of the city, addressing a critical need for improved infrastructure. The twin tunnels will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also enhance the overall efficiency of Mumbai’s transportation network. According to sources within the MMRDA, the land transfer to the contractor is imminent, marking a significant milestone in the project’s timeline. The approval from the Mumbai Port Trust represents a critical step forward, ensuring that the project can proceed without further delays.
The Orange Gate-Marine Drive tunnel project is a key component of Mumbai’s broader infrastructure development strategy, aimed at bolstering the city’s connectivity and fostering economic growth. By streamlining the movement of goods and people between the western and eastern regions, the project is expected to yield substantial long-term benefits for Mumbai’s urban landscape. As the MMRDA progresses with the tunneling works, the successful implementation of this project will stand as a testament to the city’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure and addressing the evolving needs of its residents and businesses.
