Greater Noida West’s First STP Project Worth Rs80 Crore Gets Green Light

The Greater Noida authority has announced the commencement of an Rs80 crore sewage treatment plant (STP) project in Greater Noida West. This initiative aims to mitigate the ongoing issue of sewage disposal into drains and the subsequent pollution of the Hindon and Yamuna rivers.

The STP, with a capacity to treat 45 million litres of wastewater daily, will cater to the burgeoning urban areas of Greater Noida West, ensuring that all sewage undergoes proper treatment before discharge. Scheduled to commence construction soon after the tender process concludes, the project is expected to be operational within 1.5 years from the start date. According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Noida authority, the STP project marks a crucial milestone in the region’s environmental management strategy. Originally conceived in October 2019, the project faced delays attributed to administrative changes within the authority. However, with the tender now issued and bids to be finalized by July 31, progress towards selecting a suitable contractor is underway.

The development of Greater Noida West, previously known as Noida Extension, has been characterized by rapid urbanization and housing development, with projections indicating a future population of 1.7 million by 2031. Currently inhabited by approximately 600,000 residents across various housing societies, the area’s infrastructure demands necessitate immediate upgrades to sewage management systems. Future-proofing the STP’s capacity, authorities plan to increase its capabilities to 246 million litres per day as demographic and developmental pressures grow. Concurrently, the Greater Noida authority has also initiated smaller infrastructure projects amounting to Rs18 crore, encompassing road repairs, park maintenance, and drainage system enhancements across sectors and villages within Greater Noida West.

Local residents have expressed urgency for the STP’s completion, emphasizing its critical role in alleviating civic issues arising from inadequate sewage treatment. With sewage currently being indiscriminately discharged into drains, concerns over hygiene, environmental pollution, and urban planning inefficiencies have intensified. As Greater Noida West continues to evolve as a residential and commercial hub, the successful implementation of the Rs80 crore STP project underscores a proactive approach towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship. By enhancing sewage treatment infrastructure, authorities aim to safeguard public health, preserve natural resources, and bolster the area’s attractiveness for future residents and investors alike.
