Greater Noida West has achieved a significant environmental milestone with the ecological revival of a 4-acre extinct water body in Roza Yakubpur. Once a neglected dumping ground choked with garbage and plastic, the site has been transformed into a thriving green space brimming with biodiversity. This ambitious project, spearheaded under a corporate social responsibility initiative by Noida Power Company Ltd (NPCL) in partnership with the Greater Noida authority and NGO SAFE, exemplifies a concerted effort towards urban ecological restoration and sustainable development, creating a vital ‘green lung’ for the community.
The rejuvenation involved the extensive removal of over 16 tons of waste, including 1.5 tons of plastic, which was subsequently recycled into benches and chairs, preventing an estimated 4.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The site now features a 1-acre water body with an island designed to attract aquatic life, while the remaining three acres have been developed into a biodiversity park. This park is densely planted with over 1,500 native trees, projected to sequester 33 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Furthermore, the restored area functions as a vital rainwater catchment system, capable of conserving 4.1 million litres annually, supported by a solar-powered irrigation system that saves significant energy units.
The restoration work, which began in January 2025 and has completed 4 of a total 10-acre site, now serves as a crucial urban green lung. It significantly improves air quality, replenishes groundwater, and provides a much-needed refuge for native and migratory birds. This transformation is a testament to sustained collaborative efforts and community concern, turning a neglected space into a vibrant ecological asset for Greater Noida.
This eco-friendly initiative highlights effective partnerships for urban renewal, fostering a sustainable environment and enhancing local biodiversity. It serves as a model for equitable development, converting neglected sites into valuable community assets that improve public health and ecological balance for residents.
