Greater Noida Undertakes Widespread Replantation Drive After Summer Sapling Losses

The Greater Noida Authority has launched an extensive replantation drive to restore greenery along a key urban corridor, specifically between the Jagat Farm rotary and the old authority office rotary. This immediate action follows public concern over dried saplings along this prominent stretch, which succumbed to the intense summer heat. Officials from the horticulture department confirmed that fresh saplings were planted over the weekend, marking the beginning of a city-wide effort to replenish green cover.

Horticulture officials clarified that the replacement of dried plants is a standard part of their green upkeep, a seasonal cycle that accounts for sapling losses, especially during extreme weather conditions. While no official tally of summer sapling losses was released, estimates suggest that 25-40% of those planted before the monsoon may have withered due to severe heat stress and insufficient soil moisture. The current replantation efforts will continue across other affected areas of the city, with public feedback playing a crucial role in identifying such spots. Field teams are promptly directed to take action, particularly during the monsoon season when the survival rates for new saplings are significantly higher.

Beyond routine maintenance, the horticulture department is also planning a larger plantation drive this monsoon season, aiming to plant over 200,000 saplings. This ambitious target surpasses initial goals and will focus on both residential and industrial areas. The initiative is not merely for beautification but plays a critical role in regulating microclimates, recharging groundwater, and filtering air pollution—functions that are increasingly vital as urban areas expand and heatwaves intensify. This concerted effort underscores Greater Noida’s commitment to enhancing its urban green infrastructure and promoting environmental sustainability.

These ongoing efforts exemplify the city’s proactive approach to environmental management, crucial for sustainable urban development and climate resilience. By prioritizing urban greenery and responding to community feedback, the authority is working towards improving air quality and ecological balance for its residents.
