Greater Noida is set to witness the installation of over 2,700 surveillance cameras across 310 locations as part of the ‘Safe City’ project. The initiative, driven by the Greater Noida Authority in collaboration with local law enforcement, aims to ensure comprehensive surveillance coverage of the city’s key entry and exit points, busy public areas, shopping malls, metro stations, and main thoroughfares. Additionally, police will be equipped with 20 drones to monitor large gatherings such as fairs, religious processions, and other events prone to crowding.
The Greater Noida Authority is currently in the process of selecting a contractor to implement this extensive surveillance network, with work expected to commence in October. Tenders for the project are anticipated to be issued soon, indicating the project is swiftly moving towards its execution phase. This initiative is a part of a broader strategy to make Greater Noida a ‘Safe City’, distinct from the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) already in place in nearby Noida. Unlike ITMS, which primarily focuses on traffic violations and road safety through strategically placed cameras at 49 identified traffic congestion hotspots, the ‘Safe City’ project aims to create a comprehensive security blanket that encompasses crime prevention and overall public safety.
The planned surveillance network will be monitored from an integrated control room at the Greater Noida Authority office, allowing for real-time oversight by both the Authority and local police forces. The control room will operate around the clock to ensure rapid response capabilities to any incidents captured on camera. To enhance the reliability and efficiency of this system, dedicated fibre optic cables will be installed, minimising the risk of internet connectivity issues that could otherwise hamper surveillance efforts.
In addition to the new cameras, the Greater Noida Authority is considering integrating existing cameras installed by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and industrial organisations into the broader surveillance network. This integration would provide a more comprehensive view of the city’s security landscape, making it easier for law enforcement agencies to respond swiftly to incidents across Greater Noida. The enhanced surveillance measures are primarily targeted at safeguarding vulnerable populations, including senior citizens, women, and children, who are often more susceptible to crime. By covering all major public areas and ensuring that sensitive zones are under continuous watch, the initiative aims to deter criminal activities and provide a safer environment for all residents.
Neighbouring Noida has also embarked on a similar path, with plans to install over 2,500 cameras at approximately 550 locations. The Noida Authority has already implemented the ITMS, which includes over 1,050 cameras across 82 locations, focusing predominantly on managing and reducing traffic violations. As Greater Noida prepares for this technological upgrade, the emphasis on integrating modern surveillance tools, such as drones and advanced cameras, reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban safety and security management. The ‘Safe City’ project is expected to not only enhance public confidence but also position Greater Noida as a model city in terms of smart and secure urban living.
