Greater Noida to Construct U Turns Between Gaur Chowk and Tigri to Ease Traffic

Greater Noida is set to implement a new traffic decongestion plan with the construction of two U-turns on the busy 60-metre-wide road between Gaur Chowk and Tigri. Aimed at easing pressure from residential societies like Gaur City-2, which houses nearly 40,000 residents, the project is estimated to cost ₹3 crore. The U-turns one near Khajur Chowk and another before the Tigri roundabout are expected to improve vehicular flow toward NH-24, cutting congestion and travel delays during rush hours.

The move comes in response to long-standing complaints from residents and commuters over daily traffic snarls, particularly during peak office and school hours. With the explosive growth in residential developments around Gaur City-2, traffic volumes have surged beyond the road network’s capacity, often resulting in gridlocks, especially near Tigri roundabout. The newly proposed U-turns are expected to offer direct access points for vehicles, thereby reducing the need to detour through overloaded intersections.

According to officials, the first U-turn will be constructed directly in front of Gaur City-2 Society, while the second will be located just before the Tigri roundabout, near Khajur Chowk. These placements are intended to distribute traffic more evenly across the corridor, minimising bottlenecks and improving flow towards both NH-24 Ghaziabad and internal sectors of Greater Noida West. The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), which is overseeing the project, has also confirmed plans to widen roads at key stretches to support the increased vehicular load. Widening work will include creating dedicated lanes for vehicles merging back into traffic after making a U-turn, reducing potential conflict points. The project will also include new signage, improved road markings, and enhanced lighting to ensure nighttime safety. GNIDA has indicated that smart traffic signal systems and CCTV cameras will also be installed to manage and monitor traffic in real-time, especially at newly modified intersections.

The ₹3 crore project cost includes civil construction, traffic engineering inputs, and safety installations. Officials stated that tenders for the project will be floated shortly, and construction is expected to begin within the coming quarter. The timeline for completion has not yet been disclosed, but GNIDA is reportedly aiming for a swift rollout, given the current traffic stress levels in the region. This U-turn development is part of a broader strategy to streamline traffic in Greater Noida West, a region that has seen rapid population growth and urbanisation. Similar U-turns constructed earlier across the area have shown positive results. Two such turning points between Gaur Chowk and Iteda roundabout, two more between Iteda and Ekmurti roundabout, and two others between Ekmurti and Roza roundabout have already been built. A U-turn near Sector Pi-1 on a 130-metre-wide road has also improved local movement in that sector.

Despite these previous interventions, the Gaur Chowk to Tigri stretch continues to struggle with high volumes of daily traffic. The lack of turning options forces many drivers to use longer, congested routes, creating pressure on intersections like the Tigri roundabout. Residents, especially those commuting to Ghaziabad and Delhi, have routinely highlighted delays and poor traffic management as top concerns. Local residents and resident welfare associations have largely welcomed the project. They say the new U-turns will shorten travel time, reduce vehicle idling, and even help cut fuel consumption. “We’ve been dealing with 15–20 minute delays just to cross the Tigri roundabout,” said a resident. “If this U-turn reduces that wait, it’s a much-needed change.”

However, residents also pointed out the need for integrated planning. “The U-turns are a good start, but we also need footbridges, better traffic enforcement, and possibly a dedicated bus corridor. Otherwise, we’re just shifting the problem elsewhere,” said a local planner. Transport analysts agree that while U-turns can help relieve local congestion, they are not a silver bullet. “Strategically placed U-turns are a proven solution in many urban models, especially when supported by signage, adequate road width, and enforcement,” said a consultant. “But for lasting impact, they must be part of a more holistic urban mobility framework.”

Another point of concern raised by both residents and experts is pedestrian safety. With increased turning points, crossing the road becomes more hazardous unless dedicated pedestrian infrastructure is included. Authorities have assured that safety elements like zebra crossings and signage for pedestrian awareness will be part of the U-turn development phase. Traffic police are expected to play a key role in the initial weeks of implementation. Officers will help direct traffic, ensure lane discipline, and guide drivers through the newly created U-turns to prevent confusion or accidents during the adaptation period. GNIDA also plans an awareness campaign before the U-turns open to familiarise the public with the new routes and changes.

Environmental analysts also note that such projects can have indirect benefits. Reduced congestion means fewer emissions, and shorter routes translate to lower fuel consumption. Given Greater Noida’s increasing air quality concerns, even small interventions like this can help improve urban sustainability. As the city continues its push toward becoming a smarter, more connected satellite hub, projects like these will likely become more frequent. With real estate booming and commercial activity expanding in Greater Noida West, infrastructure needs to evolve rapidly—and responsively. The U-turn project is being closely monitored as a model for micro-interventions that have macro-impact.

Once completed, the U-turns between Gaur Chowk and Tigri are expected to serve as a critical traffic relief valve for thousands of daily commuters. Whether it truly delivers the expected decongestion, however, will depend on timely execution, follow-up infrastructure, and strong enforcement. For now, residents are hopeful that this development will mark a tangible improvement in their everyday travel experience across Greater Noida West.
