Greater Noida Deploys Machines To Clean 100km Roads Every Single Day

Greater Noida is set to intensify its citywide cleanliness mission by deploying two truck-mounted mechanical sweepers to clean over 100 kilometres of roads daily. In an effort to curb particulate pollution and enhance civic hygiene, the Greater Noida Authority has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to hire an agency responsible for operating and maintaining the sweeping machines. The machines will cover arterial stretches overnight, ensuring cleaner roads and markets before the morning rush begins.

The Authority, through a recently issued request for proposal (RFP), seeks to hire a private agency to manage the operation and maintenance of these machines. Each new mechanical sweeper is expected to cover at least 57 kilometres per day, with the goal of ensuring that all designated roads and market stretches are cleaned systematically. This initiative is aimed at addressing the growing concern of road dust and suspended particulate matter—particularly PM10 and PM2.5—which have been identified as major contributors to the region’s deteriorating air quality. Officials believe that consistent and large-scale mechanical sweeping will reduce airborne pollutants, especially during peak traffic hours when road dust becomes most hazardous.

Greater Noida spans an area of 380 square kilometres, encompassing 95 sectors and 124 villages. The rapidly growing population, which now exceeds 10 lakh, has placed increased pressure on the city’s infrastructure and cleanliness needs. The civic administration has demarcated the city into eight work circles, each requiring coordinated sanitation efforts. The cleaning schedule, according to the RFP, mandates that sweeping operations occur between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM. All main roads are to be cleaned at least once daily, and all markets, especially those operating during weekly haats, must be swept before 6:00 AM. This not only ensures a cleaner start to the day but also minimises public disruption and traffic snarls.

The agency selected for the contract will be required to provide trained operators with valid heavy vehicle driving licences and ensure that all helpers are skilled in machine operations. Additionally, the contract outlines strict norms against mid-route dumping. All collected waste must be transported directly to designated sanitary landfill sites such as Astauli, helping avoid illegal disposal and secondary pollution. Mechanical sweeping has been a part of Noida’s cleanliness programme since 2019, but this expanded deployment marks a notable step in improving the scale and regularity of operations. Weekly washing of the machines is mandated to maintain hygiene and performance, further underscoring the city’s push for cleaner public infrastructure.

This development aligns with broader goals to build smart, sustainable, and health-conscious urban spaces, offering a scalable model for other growing Indian cities facing similar challenges.
