The Karnataka government has formally announced the dissolution of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), paving the way for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to assume control over the city’s governance starting May 15.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will chair the new authority, while Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar has been named vice-chairman. The GBA is expected to oversee critical functions such as financial planning, urban development, and civic services for the entire metropolitan region. Under the restructured model, the current BBMP region may be split into seven municipal corporations, each led by its own commissioner.
This is part of a broader plan to decentralise urban management and improve administrative efficiency. The GBA will cover an estimated 1,400 square kilometres, integrating the responsibilities of major civic bodies including the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM).
The new governance structure is expected to streamline coordination across urban infrastructure and planning departments, with an emphasis on transparency, accountability, and localised service delivery.
