The Government of India has announced plans for five new ropeway projects in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, aimed at improving connectivity and promoting eco-tourism in these regions.
The proposed projects will be developed under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, a national initiative to expand cable car systems across the country.
Among the five projects, the most ambitious is the 24 km ropeway from Khanapara to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. This project is expected to drastically reduce travel time to the airport while easing traffic congestion in the city. The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has been assigned the task of implementing these projects.
The NHLML has issued a tender for consultants to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the proposed ropeways, marking the first step toward their development.
The ropeway projects proposed for Assam include:
1. Ganganagar Part-VII to Bhuban Pahar Mahadev Temple, Cachar (2.78 km)
2. Jatinga Bird Watching Tower to Hempeupet Peak, Dima Hasao district (3.50 km)
3. Agnigarh Pahar to Bhairabi Mandir, Sonitpur district (1.80 km)
4. Khanapara to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati (24 km)
In Arunachal Pradesh, a 1.85 km ropeway is proposed at Parushram.
These ropeways will improve access to religious, tourist, and transport hubs while supporting the government’s goal to promote sustainable infrastructure in the region. With these new projects, the government aims to reduce carbon emissions by providing more eco-friendly transport options for both locals and tourists.
In addition to the new ropeways, the government is also progressing with other initiatives, including a ropeway between Kamakhya Railway Station and the Kamakhya Temple, which is expected to enhance access to the temple, a major pilgrimage site in the region These initiatives reflect the government’s focus on integrating modern infrastructure with environmental sustainability to foster economic growth, tourism, and better living standards in remote areas.
