Gorakhpur Link Expressway Opens Connecting East UP

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will formally inaugurate the 91.35‑kilometre Gorakhpur Link Expressway today. The access‑controlled route, designed to improve mobility in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, will be launched at Salarpur in Azamgarh before tracing its way to the Bhagwanpur Toll Plaza near Gorakhpur. At the inaugural ceremony in Salarpur, CM Adityanath will address local residents before travelling along the new corridor to Gorakhpur, where a second event, including a speech and ceremonial duties, will mark the expressway’s operational commencement.

Following the project’s construction, travel time between Gorakhpur and Uruwa, which once took up to an hour, will now be reduced to just 20–25 minutes. The expressway also integrates seamlessly with the Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur, enabling a direct, high-speed route from Gorakhpur to Lucknow in approximately 3.5 hours. This improved connectivity extends further, accelerating journeys to Delhi and Agra. The four‑lane expressway, built at a cost of ₹7,283 crore—including land acquisition—crosses four districts: Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Azamgarh. Constructed in two phases—Jaitpur to Phulwaria (48.3 km) by APCO Infratech, and Phulwaria to Salarpur (43 km) by Dilip Buildcon—it is designed to be expanded to six lanes as traffic volumes increase.

On the day of inauguration, CM Adityanath will also flag off a specially equipped UP Expressway Development Authority (UPEDA) security fleet. The convoy features floodlit Innovas, heavy‑lift cranes, ambulances, Hydra vehicles and rescue campers. A rehearsal deployment was carried out ahead of the formal launch. As part of the event, the chief minister is scheduled to inspect the Kamharia Ghat bridge, a critical element of the expressway corridor. Simultaneously, a tree‑planting drive at the Gorakhpur end is planned, where he will plant a Harishankari sapling alongside ministers and state officials, reinforcing the government’s attention to ecological balance and sustainability in infrastructural projects.

The inauguration will conclude with the CM interacting with the workforce and reviewing photo exhibitions in recognition of the engineering and labour contributions that brought the project to completion.Economic analysts note that the Gorakhpur Link Expressway marks a turning point for Eastern Uttar Pradesh. By bridging regional hubs and reducing travel times dramatically, the infrastructure not only facilitates faster movement of goods and people, but also connects previously isolated agricultural and industrial regions to urban centres, with potential cascading benefits for trade, employment and investment.

Nevertheless, some experts caution that long‑term success will depend on maintaining the expressway, ensuring safety protocols, and managing the future expansion to six lanes. Environmentalists also highlight the importance of the planted saplings taking root, ensuring green buffers to offset concrete development.

As the expressway officially opens today, the narrative shifts from construction to operation, with the performance of UPEDA’s security fleet, road safety measures and expanding traffic flow serving as benchmarks. For residents, traders and daily commuters, the project offers a promise of faster, safer journeys—potentially signalling a regional growth surge in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
