Andheri is set to fully reopen on May 9, 2025, following extensive repairs and alignment work.
The bridge, a crucial connector between Andheri East and West, has been closed for over two years due to structural concerns. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed all major construction work, and finishing touches are being applied to ensure the bridge is ready for public use. The reopening is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the western suburbs, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters.
The bridge was initially closed in November 2022 after inspections revealed significant structural issues. The first phase of repairs was completed in February 2024, but a six-foot gap between the Gokhale Bridge and the CD Barfiwala Flyover prevented full connectivity. In April 2024, the BMC initiated alignment work with the assistance of experts from IIT Bombay and VJTI. The final phase of the project is now complete, and the bridge is ready for full operation. Local residents and commuters have expressed relief at the impending reopening, as the bridge serves as a vital link for both private and public transport. The BMC’s efforts to expedite the repairs and ensure safety have been commendable, and the reopening is expected to have a positive impact on traffic flow in the area.
As Mumbai continues to grow, infrastructure projects like the Gokhale Bridge are essential to maintaining connectivity and supporting the city’s development. The successful completion of this project serves as a model for future urban infrastructure initiatives.
