Godrej Properties has partnered with the NGO Feedback Foundation to publish a
report titled ‘Waste Matters’ which serves as a comprehensive guide for improved construction waste management in the real estate sector. The report highlights the
need for collaborative efforts across the industry to effectively manage
construction waste.
The research involved an assessment of waste generation at various stages of
construction across 12 Godrej Properties and 2 Mahindra Lifespace Developers
under construction projects in four major cities: Bengaluru, Gurugram, Mumbai
and Pune. The findings reveal that approximately 25 million tonne of construction
waste were generated over the past decade in India.
One significant insight from the report is that for every million sq ft of residential
development, approximately 3,648 tonne of construction waste are generated.
Concrete and gypsum were identified as the top two contributors to construction
waste, accounting for 1.672 and 0.411 kg per sq ft, respectively. Other notable
contributors included metal, sand, cement, stone and tiles.
The handbook not only presents key findings but also offers actionable insights on
waste reduction, segregation, traceability and recycling. It concludes with general
recommendations on waste management for various stakeholders, including
developers, contractors, urban local bodies, policymakers and government
authorities.
Godrej Properties and Feedback Foundation’s collaborative effort aims to drive
positive change in construction waste management practices within the real estate
sector, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally
responsible future.
