Godrej Properties and IIHS Spearhead Waste-to-Compost Project in Karnataka

Godrej Properties has embarked on a transformative partnership with the Chikkaballapur City Municipal Council (CMC) and the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) to pioneer the City-Farmer Partnership project in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. This strategic initiative is designed to tackle the city’s waste management challenges while promoting sustainable practices in organic farming.

Central to the project is the conversion of organic wet waste into high-quality compost, benefitting local farmers across 17 villages in Chikkaballapur. Approximately 759 tonnes of legacy waste have been processed into organic compost, supplied to 109 farmers at no cost, aimed at encouraging the adoption of organic farming techniques. Moreover, an additional 569 tonnes of segregated wet waste has been efficiently managed in collaboration with 81 farmers. The collaboration underscores Godrej Properties’ commitment to fostering symbiotic urban-rural relationships and promoting environmental sustainability.

IIHS has played a pivotal role by conducting training sessions for over 100 farmers on converting municipal waste into organic compost. Simultaneously, 45 CMC staff members have received training on critical aspects of waste management, emphasizing the importance of segregated waste collection and transportation. The project has also prioritized community engagement through ward-level meetings and interactive sessions involving CMC officials, IIHS project teams, Anganwadi workers, and local residents. Innovative outreach methods, including six street plays and a road show, have effectively communicated the benefits of waste segregation to citizens and businesses alike.

A spokesperson at Godrej Properties, highlighted the project’s significance in addressing urban waste management challenges and promoting sustainable practices. He emphasized the company’s dedication to collaborating with diverse communities to achieve lasting environmental improvements. This initiative not only aligns with Godrej Properties’ long-term environmental goals but also exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships in driving positive change. By empowering local communities to convert urban waste into valuable resources, the project aims to enhance environmental stewardship and support sustainable agricultural practices across Karnataka.
