Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant unveiled plans on Wednesday for the state government to spearhead commercial bamboo plantations along the riverbanks of Goa, aimed at mitigating the escalating issue of soil erosion.
Addressing attendees at a World Environment Day event organized by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), Sawant outlined the government’s commitment to provide farmers with 1 lakh saplings between June and August. Highlighting the rapid growth rate of the chosen bamboo variety, Sawant projected that within five years, the plantations would yield significant results. Moreover, the state government pledged to facilitate market linkages for farmers, enabling them to capitalize on the bamboo’s commercial potential.
In addition to the bamboo initiative, Sawant revealed plans to bolster the cashew plantation industry in Goa. Recognizing the importance of promoting local varieties of cashew, Sawant expressed the government’s determination to reduce dependency on imported nuts, ensuring that the demand within Goa is met with locally grown, superior-quality produce. Furthermore, Sawant announced the government’s intent to allocate additional funds to panchayats demonstrating effective solid waste management practices. Commending Mencurem (Bicholim) and Dongurli-Thane (Sattari) panchayats for their exemplary waste collection and disposal systems, Sawant emphasized the importance of incentivizing sustainable waste management initiatives at the grassroots level.
Acknowledging the significance of environmental sustainability in infrastructure development, Sawant revealed plans to introduce green certification for school and college buildings across the state. This initiative aims to promote environmentally-conscious construction practices and foster a culture of sustainability within educational institutions. Meanwhile, the GSPCB recognized several organizations for their commitment to environmental stewardship, including Deccan Fine Chemicals (India), Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Ltd, Godrej Locks and Architectural Fittings and Systems, and Britacel Silicones, among others. These firms received accolades for their exemplary performance in energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, and other environmental parameters. Additionally, the Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) honored individuals and farmers for their contributions to biodiversity conservation, underscoring the importance of grassroots efforts in preserving Goa’s natural heritage.
