India’s maritime defence and coastal surveillance capabilities, the Indian Coast Guard has inducted ICGS Adamya, the first in a series of eight fast patrol vessels (FPVs) constructed by Goa Shipyard. Designed with state-of-the-art weaponry and propulsion technology, the vessel promises enhanced agility and firepower for critical coastal operations across India’s maritime zones.
The ICGS Adamya marks a new chapter in the Indian Coast Guard’s strategic modernisation, featuring controllable pitch propellers and indigenously developed gearboxes for superior operational control. These systems enable advanced manoeuvrability during high-speed pursuits and coastal patrols, positioning the vessel as a pivotal asset for maritime security. Defence analysts note that this technical upgrade enhances India’s ability to respond swiftly to threats and perform efficient law enforcement in offshore zones.
Armed with a 30mm CRN-91 cannon, two 12.7mm remote-controlled guns, and a fire-control system, ICGS Adamya is equipped to conduct multi-role operations, from intercepting smugglers to deterring hostile incursions. Officials state that the weapon suite, combined with surveillance sensors and high-speed mobility, makes it ideal for exclusive economic zone (EEZ) protection, anti-poaching missions, and search-and-rescue tasks. The ship can execute missions across vast stretches of India’s western coastline and beyond.
The patrol vessel is part of a larger contract awarded in 2022, under which eight FPVs were commissioned from Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for ₹473 crore. The project aligns with the government’s Make in India vision, with domestic design and manufacturing ensuring economic and strategic autonomy. With GSL having launched multiple vessels, including Akshar and Achal, the Coast Guard is on track to strengthen its coastal fleet within the next two years.
These vessels are being inducted at a time when maritime surveillance is gaining urgency due to increasing cross-border smuggling, illegal fishing, and transnational threats. Defence experts highlight that FPVs like Adamya act as force multipliers, reducing Coast Guard response times during emergencies. With extended endurance, faster speed, and precision targeting, these assets support India’s evolving naval strategy focused on blue economy protection, coastal safety, and regional maritime dominance.
The induction of ICGS Adamya signals India’s ongoing commitment to bolstering indigenous defence production and maritime readiness. As additional fast patrol vessels join the fleet, the Indian Coast Guard will gain greater agility in safeguarding national waters. With enhanced surveillance, defence, and operational capacity, the vessel stands as a testament to India’s evolving defence capabilities and growing emphasis on maritime security.
