Goa Pilgrims Urge Railways To Improve Vailankanni Train Services Nationwide

The annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Vailankanni drawing near, railway users in Goa are urging Indian Railways to increase the number of special trains to the sacred destination. During a recent divisional meeting, demands were also raised for earlier announcements and better scheduling, ensuring smoother travel for hundreds of devotees attending the novenas and feast each year.

At a recent consultative meeting held in Hubballi, a demand was made to expand the number of special trains running from Goa to Vailankanni during the annual pilgrimage period. Devotees have found it increasingly difficult to secure seats due to limited services. Suggestions were made for additional trips between Vasco and Vailankanni, especially between August 27 and September 8, to accommodate growing numbers of faithful.

Stakeholders suggested that Indian Railways should announce these special train schedules at least a month in advance. This would help pilgrims plan their travel more efficiently, especially during the high-demand religious season. Experts present at the meeting said that operationally, running additional trains was feasible, and the proposal would be forwarded to the concerned planning division for final approval after the divisional head’s review.

The weekly service currently operating from Vasco to Vailankanni was also discussed. Pilgrims pointed out that the train often arrives late, leaving very little time for spiritual activities before the return journey. A request was made to revise the departure schedule from Vailankanni, giving devotees an extra day for prayers and local visits. This feedback has been recorded for consideration in future planning.

Railway authorities acknowledged the significance of the Vailankanni pilgrimage for Goan devotees and agreed to evaluate the feasibility of proposed changes. Improved connectivity, timely announcements, and efficient scheduling were highlighted as ways to enhance the pilgrim experience. The matter will be tabled for discussion again in the upcoming railway planning sessions, keeping in mind operational constraints and passenger needs.

As Goa’s spiritual travellers prepare for their annual journey to Vailankanni, calls for improved railway services continue to grow. With operational feasibility and timely planning, authorities are expected to consider adding special trains and improving scheduling. These adjustments could significantly enhance the pilgrimage experience, offering comfort, flexibility, and better access to one of India’s most revered Marian shrines.
