Goa Inches Towards 2,000mm Rainfall, IMD Issues Red Alert

Goa is bracing through an exceptional monsoon season, with rainfall nearing the 2,000mm mark across several regions amidst continuous torrential downpours since Sunday. The state’s rain gauge stations have been registering unprecedented figures, escalating concerns and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a rare red alert for three consecutive days.

Recent data from IMD highlights that Panaji, on July 8, recorded the highest July rainfall in 70 years, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing deluge. In North Goa, Valpoi has accumulated 1,883.1mm of rainfall since June 1, while Sanguem in South Goa closely follows with 1,777mm during the same period. Even the relatively lower figures in Dabolim at 1,273.7mm demonstrate the widespread impact of the current monsoon surge. The southwest monsoon’s robust activity over Goa has resulted in substantial local flooding and disruptions to daily life, particularly noticeable following Tuesday’s downpour. Pernem received a staggering 192mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, while Mapusa documented 115.2mm during the same timeframe. These intense rains have not only swelled local water bodies but also contributed to a significant drop in temperatures, with maximums around 26.4°C and minimums dipping to 23.4°C. Looking ahead, IMD has issued an orange alert for Wednesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas across Goa. Areas could experience rainfall exceeding 64.4mm in 24 hours, with some regions likely to surpass 115.5mm. This weather pattern is anticipated to persist until July 13, accompanied by strong surface winds gusting up to 50kmph. Local authorities have urged residents, particularly those residing in low-lying areas, to exercise caution and remain prepared for potential inundation risks. The ongoing monsoon’s intensity underscores the need for proactive measures to mitigate flood impacts and ensure public safety amidst the heightened weather alert.

As Goa navigates through this relentless monsoon spell, monitoring and preparedness remain critical to safeguarding lives and property across the state. Authorities continue to monitor weather developments closely, emphasizing community resilience and adaptive responses in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
