Goa Government Sets Deadline for Malim Jetty STP Completion

The Goa government has provided a new timeline for the completion of the long-delayed sewage treatment plant (STP) at Malim Jetty, with the expected commissioning set for May 31, 2025. This announcement was made in response to a recent order from the Bombay High Court at Goa, which had raised concerns over the plant’s delayed commissioning and its implications on public health and environmental safety.
The case, which came up for hearing on Monday, followed a recent inspection that highlighted the potential health hazards posed by stagnant water near the STP. Experts warned that the standing water could serve as an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, exacerbating public health concerns in the region. In light of these risks, the high court had demanded an explanation for the delay and an updated timeline for the plant’s commissioning.
The offecials appeared before the court to explain the situation. She informed the court that the initial contract for the STP, awarded to Coastal Consolidated Structure Pvt Ltd, had been foreclosed. They said, had led to further delays in the project. Attempts to re-tender the work had been unsuccessful, with no responses to three separate calls for bids. This lack of interest from contractors has complicated the commissioning process, pushing back the original deadlines.
According to the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), the refurbishment work at the jetty, which includes the STP, is now slated to be tendered separately. The timeline for this work has been extended, with a new completion target set for March 31, 2026, subject to the identification of a suitable contractor. A fresh tender for the jetty’s refurbishment was issued on March 10, 2025, but the outcome remains uncertain.
While the government works towards resolving these issues, the delay in the STP’s commissioning continues to be a pressing concern. The plant, once operational, is expected to improve the waste management system at Malim Jetty, benefiting both the local environment and the public. As the government works to find a solution, the urgency of ensuring a timely completion of the project remains clear, especially with the monsoon season approaching and the risk of further flooding and health issues increasing.
This situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the government in ensuring timely infrastructure development and the need for effective management to avoid public health and environmental issues. With the new deadline in place, citizens and authorities alike are hopeful that the Malim Jetty STP will soon be operational, reducing the threat of mosquito-borne diseases and improving waste treatment in the area
