Gurugram: In a significant move to enhance pedestrian safety at critical intersections, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced plans to construct four foot over bridges (FOBs) on Sohna Road, Sheetla Mata Road, Old Delhi Road, and near the Millennium City metro station. The tender for these projects will be issued within a week, according to GMDA officials.
A senior GMDA official confirmed that the proposal has received administrative approval, and the tendering process for these four FOBs will commence shortly. The estimated cost for these projects is approximately ₹16 crore. The FOBs will feature stainless steel decking, and depending on spatial constraints, they will include stairs and escalators to ensure pedestrian safety and convenience.
The decision to build these FOBs follows a detailed study of traffic and pedestrian movement on the identified roads. The contractors will have an estimated eight to nine months to complete the construction of these bridges. The FOB at the Millennium City metro station in Sector 29, for example, will connect from the Fortis Hospital side to the existing FOB opposite the metro station, facilitating easier access across the road and to the metro.
In addition to these new projects, GMDA is currently constructing an FOB on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway at Narsinghpur, a location with heavy pedestrian traffic. Plans are also underway to engage corporate partnerships for additional FOBs near the Maruti factory on Old Delhi Road and opposite Medanta Hospital, among other locations.
Further demonstrating GMDA’s commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure, the authority has approved the construction of 154 bus queue shelters. The tender process for these shelters will begin within a week, with an anticipated project cost of ₹37 crore. These shelters will be developed by GMDA’s mobility branch and will be strategically located on city roads in new sectors along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and the Dwarka Expressway.
Specifically, 80 bus queue shelters will be constructed in sectors 69 to 95, while 74 shelters will be built between sectors 99 to 115. “The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of bus queue shelters has been approved by the GMDA CEO, and we aim to start inviting tenders soon, with the goal of awarding these by next month,” stated a senior GMDA official.
These initiatives are part of GMDA’s broader efforts to enhance urban mobility and ensure pedestrian safety, reflecting the authority’s commitment to comprehensive and sustainable urban development in Gurugram.
