In a bid to bolster tax compliance, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched criminal proceedings against approximately 40 property owners who tendered bounced cheques for property tax remittances.
The cumulative value of these dishonoured instruments stands at a formidable ₹11 crore, signalling a significant challenge in the municipality’s revenue collection endeavours. Despite GHMC’s proactive measures to streamline tax retrieval processes, the incidence of bounced cheques underscores a pertinent setback. Nevertheless, amidst this crackdown on delinquent taxpayers, GHMC has achieved commendable success in amassing ₹1921 crore in property tax revenues for the fiscal year 2023-24.
GHMC Commissioner D. Ronald Rose has responded assertively to these developments, issuing a stern warning to defaulters while urging them to expeditiously settle their outstanding tax dues. With the anticipation of addressing additional instances of bounced cheques in the forthcoming days, Rose has underscored the imperative nature of adherence to tax regulations. Furthermore, Commissioner D. Ronald Rose has emphasised the impending closure of the window for availing a 5% rebate on property taxes for the ongoing fiscal year, slated for April 30. Property owners are strongly urged to capitalise on this opportunity and fulfil their tax obligations promptly to avert legal ramifications. In essence, GHMC’s unwavering commitment to tax enforcement underscores its resolve to fortify fiscal discipline and sustain revenue inflows vital for municipal development initiatives.
