The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated a significant overhaul of its street lighting infrastructure by inviting fresh tenders for the comprehensive maintenance of LED street lights across the city.
This decision follows the expiration of the existing contract with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), prompting the GHMC to seek a more efficient and transparent solution to address the city’s street lighting needs. The GHMC’s standing committee convened a special meeting to deliberate on the future of the city’s street lighting maintenance. During this session, officials presented two primary options: renewing the contract with EESL under revised terms or initiating a new tender process to engage a different agency through transparent bidding. After thorough discussions and a detailed presentation highlighting the shortcomings of the previous arrangement, the committee unanimously decided to proceed with the latter option.
The new tender aims to address the deficiencies observed in the previous contract and enhance the overall efficiency of the street lighting system. Key components of the proposed contract include the phased replacement of existing lights, installation of new LED street lights, implementation of Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) boxes, and comprehensive maintenance of the entire street lighting infrastructure. In the interim period before the new agency is onboarded, the GHMC has emphasized the importance of ensuring uninterrupted street lighting services. Zonal commissioners have been directed to oversee maintenance activities to prevent any lapses in service.
This initiative is part of GHMC’s broader efforts to improve urban infrastructure and promote sustainable practices. By adopting energy-efficient LED lighting and advanced monitoring systems, the city aims to reduce energy consumption, lower maintenance costs, and enhance public safety.
