Ghatkopar Station Redevelopment Nears Milestone

The redevelopment of Ghatkopar Railway Station, a vital hub in Mumbai’s Central Railway suburban network, is gaining momentum, with nearly 50% of the project already completed. This ambitious undertaking, spearheaded by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), aims to transform the station into a modern, passenger-friendly facility, catering to the needs of over 4 lakh commuters daily.

The project, estimated to cost Rs 130 crore, is being executed in two phases. The first phase, which is nearing completion, has delivered significant improvements, including upgraded footbridges, additional ticket counters, partial roof replacements, and the installation of seven new escalators. The second phase, already underway, will introduce further enhancements, such as the construction of new footbridges, installation of additional escalators and elevators, and the addition of four elevators.

Sunil Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer of MRVC, expressed optimism about the project’s progress, stating that the full redevelopment is expected to be completed by March/April 2027. The redevelopment aims to alleviate the overcrowding at Ghatkopar Station, which serves as an interchange for both the Central Railway and the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line. The project includes the construction of an additional elevated deck on the west side, connecting to all platforms, to increase capacity. The installation of escalators, elevators, and new footbridges will also enhance accessibility for the elderly and physically challenged commuters.

Once completed, Ghatkopar Railway Station is set to become a modern transportation hub, seamlessly integrating the metro and railway networks. This will make the station more commuter-friendly and alleviate the strain on Mumbai’s overstretched public transportation system. The progress made so far on the Ghatkopar Station redevelopment project is a promising sign for the city’s infrastructure development. When fully completed, the redeveloped station will provide a safer, more efficient, and accessible commuting experience for Mumbai’s growing population, contributing to the city’s overall progress and development.
