Ghatkopar Railway Station Upgradation Moves Forward

In a significant milestone for the city’s railway infrastructure, the first phase of the Ghatkopar railway station revamp was successfully completed on 7th December 2023. A new escalator installed on platform number four marks the end of Phase 1 of the station’s upgradation project, providing commuters with improved amenities. This development is part of a broader initiative led by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to enhance facilities at 17 stations across the city.

Phase 1, which began in December 2023, has already introduced several key upgrades to Ghatkopar station, benefiting passengers with better accessibility and more modern infrastructure. A total of six escalators have been installed, enhancing movement across the platforms. However, delays in the removal of municipal toilets have affected certain aspects of the revamp, pushing some work to a later stage. Despite this, MRVC officials remain optimistic about meeting the project’s deadlines. Sunil Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer at MRVC, expressed the organisation’s commitment to transforming Ghatkopar into a modern, state-of-the-art railway hub. He assured that Phase 2 of the project is progressing well, with a strong focus on improving passenger convenience while adhering to the project timeline.

The upcoming Phase 2 plans include the construction of two new Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), each 12 metres wide and 75 metres long, connecting platforms to key stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan. Furthermore, a 300-metre-long West Deck on platform 1 and a skywalk linking platform 4 to the North-end Municipal FOB are part of the ambitious expansion. Additional facilities like a service building, multiple staircases, and lifts are also planned to improve the station’s functionality. Work on Phase 2 is already underway, with the foundation of the South FOB completed, and construction of columns and beams in progress. Demolition of the old booking office on the North FOB has also been initiated. Meanwhile, the partial construction of the new service building is nearing completion.

In addition to these ongoing works, Phase 1 saw the successful completion of a 75×12 metre FOB and an East Deck measuring 15×45 metres, along with a newly constructed booking office with four counters. The final stages of work include two-wheeler parking facilities and additional enhancements to the station’s East facade. The transformation of Ghatkopar railway station, once completed, is set to vastly improve commuter experiences, facilitating smoother, more efficient travel across the city’s suburban network.
