GCMD and INTERCARGO Partner to Decarbonise Dry Bulk Shipping Sector
A new strategic partnership has been launched to accelerate the decarbonisation of the dry bulk shipping sector. Recognising that this segment, which accounts for over 40 per cent of the world’s oceangoing fleet by tonnage, presents unique challenges, two of the industry’s most influential bodies have forged a two-year alliance. This collaboration combines technical expertise in executing pilot projects with a vast network of shipowners and regulatory influence to close critical adoption and operational gaps. The ambitious partnership is poised to not only transform global trade but also to foster the creation of more sustainable and eco-friendly port cities worldwide.
This new coalition will concentrate on promoting the adoption of energy efficiency technologies (EETs) and facilitating mutual knowledge exchange on the development and use of low- and zero-carbon fuels for dry bulk vessels. Dry bulk carriers, the workhorses of global trade, often operate on unpredictable ‘tramp’ routes, making it difficult to plan refuelling stops at ports that currently offer green fuels. This logistical hurdle, compounded by the developing nature of global bunkering infrastructure, necessitates a pragmatic, multi-faceted approach. To this end, experts are focused on pragmatic near-term solutions such as drop-in biofuels, onboard carbon capture systems, and advanced EETs, all of which are critical for meeting the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) ambitious decarbonisation targets.
The operational realities of dry bulk shipping present a significant barrier to the energy transition. Shipowners, many of whom are small and medium-sized enterprises, face uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of new technologies and often struggle to secure financing for costly upgrades. To address this, a key initiative of the partnership involves installing sensors on vessels to validate fuel savings from new technologies. This data will be used to underpin a “Pay-As-You-Save” (PAYS) financing model, which links loan repayments to verifiable fuel cost reductions, thereby de-risking investments for shipowners and unlocking capital for the transition. This innovative approach is designed to make the green transition not only an environmental necessity but also a sound financial decision.
The collaboration’s impact extends beyond the maritime industry, serving the larger societal goal of creating equitable and sustainable urban centres. Port cities, which are often major economic hubs, bear the brunt of air pollution from conventional shipping fuels. By advancing cleaner shipping technologies, this partnership contributes directly to reducing harmful emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing the health and well-being of millions of city dwellers. Furthermore, the alliance will use its consultative status at the IMO to help shape global regulatory frameworks that ensure the benefits of this transition are shared equitably. This includes advocating for financial mechanisms that support developing nations in building the necessary infrastructure for a green shipping future, ensuring no region is left behind in the global push towards a cleaner economy.
